Carla Landry

Principal

There’s a lot of clinking of champagne glasses this time of year. This is when the unsung heroes get sung, so to speak. The mail carriers, the sanitation workers, the care providers, even the restaurants that make our lives a little easier.

It’s during this season of giving and gratitude that the waitstaff gets tipped an extra Benjamin and the chef is praised by the toughest critic. Of course, we all recognize that there’s more to the customer experience than cooking and serving. How about the restaurant expeditor? That’s the person behind the scenes, responsible for the seamless client experience that ensures that the cheesy lasagna and the beef tenderloin arrive at table 5, done to perfection at the exact same time.

But how about the unsung heroes of the law firm and legal department? The expeditor in this case is the legal project manager. Here’s a raised glass to every one of you who perform the role tirelessly, faithfully … and mostly without tears. This is a well-deserved tribute and a recognition of how critical your role is in keeping the legal machinery turning.

Why is it so important to revel in a bit of appreciation? Because we all need reminders and a generous pinch of gratitude to keep doing what we’re doing despite the many obstacles. As a legal project manager, your role may happen behind the scenes, but the impact is felt throughout the firm. You bring efficiency, structure and transparency to the endless complexities of legal work. You are as important to your firm as the restaurant expeditor is to table 5.

Your Lawyers Love You (mostly)

Lawyers are grateful to you for making their lives easier and allowing them to focus more on legal nuances and less on administrative logistics. You provide the upfront systems for planning, tracking and budgeting so they are free to focus on their legal wizardry. Using rigor and discipline, you build legal project plans that:

  • Help legal teams define the scope at the outset, providing them with reliable tools to manage client expectations diplomatically;
  • Manage the timeline and monitor progress to deliver as promised;
  • Assign roles and responsibilities that establish ownership, optimize resources and leverage talent; and
  • Improve the legal team’s internal coordination and external communication.

Your Law Firm and Law Department Thrive

It’s not just your individual lawyers who notice. Your law firm and legal department are grateful, as well:

  • You provide them with data insights and analyses that drive efficiency, improve processes and use resources effectively.
  • You help them contain scope, manage variances and anticipate risk, keep legal projects on time and on budget.
  • You provide repeatable processes and workflows that transform even the most junior lawyers into super achievers, satisfied with their day-to-day contribution.
  • You help legal teams improve processes, transform operations and institutionalize knowledge as they become powerhouse contributors to the firm’s profitability.

See how wonderful you are?

Table 5 may be happy, but that doesn’t happen just because the chef is a genius. It takes planning, dedication, hard work, and a focus on the minutia along with a bird’s eye view. Just as the expeditor keeps the restaurant staff providing bubbly casseroles and sizzling steaks, you work tirelessly behind the curtain, often without even a grumbled acknowledgement that the outcome would not be the same without your efforts. You smile even as you ask for the umpteenth time “Is that actually in scope?”

Happy Clients

And, yes, the client, the primary beneficiary of your efforts, notices as well. Your clients increasingly demand realistic budgets, timely communications and the ability to predict both outcomes and billing. They don’t like the unexpected, particularly if it comes in the form of an invoice. They appreciate all that you manage to keep them from having any explaining to do to their bosses. Even if they don’t say it, they are grateful.

Cheers to All You Legal Project Managers

So, allow us to raise a toast in your honor, the hard-working, often unsung hero: the legal project manager. Your role is one that will help ensure the relevancy of the legal profession at this critical juncture. Though the battle isn’t completely won, there are more converts every month. If you haven’t heard it enough, let us reiterate: There is a tremendous need for everything you do and everything you will continue to do in 2026 to make this coming year the best ever.

We, at LawVision, are also filled with gratitude. We sincerely thank you for joining us during your project management journey. We love learning from your challenges, sharing in your triumphs and continuing the dialog with you. We are grateful for every opportunity to partner with you, helping to build stronger alignment and better outcomes for legal teams and clients worldwide. Cheers!
